Default Which carb is better for touring

Hey all. Sorry it's been so long since I've been around. Going through a nasty divorce. But I managed to keep my sportster project. Anyway, I was rebuilding my cv carb off of my 05 883, but I came into what I think is a mikuni that came off of a 2001 883. I was wondering if there was an advantage for one over the other. Please advise, thanks

Congrats on saving the important part! (Your bike) I can't speak to the Mikuni but the CV on my 95 has performed flawlessly.

It has been rebuilt once in that time. I did use the bike for mild touring (300 mile days) before I added a Road King.

The cv is supposed to work better at different altitudes because of the vacume it has in it but I have had the mikuni on my bike for years and never had any issues with it at any altitudes I have had it in. Wear I live I am only about 130' above sea level and I have been on blue ridge parkway, cherahola parkway, Sundance mountain in Colorado and plenty of other places that were well up there in altitude with no issues.

Thanks for the replies. I have already rebuilt the cv so I guess I'll stick with that. I'll have too list the mikuni for sale soon then.

ive never used a CV, but the mikuni has a 'crispier' response apparently. i love my mikuni, and the different jets you can add to it, makes me think im a motorcycle guy. dont sell it, try both of them and tell us which is better.

All carbs have their pros and cons. I have extensive experience with Mikuni round and flat slide carbs as well as CVs of various makes (Keihin, Mikuni, SU) and IMO the CV40 is underrated. Mine have performed admirably and reliably from 14K feet down to sea level and it's a pumper carb so response is good when you whack the throttle open unlike other CVs without an accelerator pump.

Which Mikuni is it?

Having run a CV and an HSR42 on my '06, I'd never go back to a CV. But, there's nothing with a properly set up CV.

If you plan to hot rod your 883 at some point with increased displacement, compression, cams etc. the Mikuni will be your ticket.
