One day I'd like to travel to a foreign land, buy a used HD and ride it exploring the areas for a few weeks and then bring it back home with me. Bucket list entry.

IMHO used HD in my Country are much much pricey...

on HD, in Italy, better buy new...

or... if i was in your shoes... i.e. a visitor...
rent one for a week... pricey too... but with all the warranties... (rent a bagger like Street Glide or Road Glide for a week spill around 800 Euros)...

This or the price differential could be enough to justify buying a used bike in the US, shipping to the EU, and then selling it there when you are done. But the logistics could be a pia.

My guess:
If you want a used one...
Buy in the US and ship her to Australia...
If you will ever be in Italy... rent...

As for the selling of US licensed bike in Italy... taxes will overwhelm you...
