Default CV Carb Help?

So I've got this '96 883. It's got a Bassani Road Rage II (short muffler) and a 7" round air filter (foam element). The low speed jet is a #45, and I've got the IMS turned out two turns (or so - I've been experimenting). Float level is spot-on as the Brits say.

PROBLEM: Although it idles fine, I cannot get the engine to take any throttle. I thought (correctly) that the accelerator pump outlet might be plugged. So I took it apart - and it was. Took care of that, now it squirts like the proverbial racehorse. Puts me to shame, actually, but never mind that.

But still, as soon as I try to give it throttle, it stumbles and dies and black smoke comes out of my brand-new exhaust like it's running SUPER-rich.

I've had the carb off so many times that I could do it in my sleep. Before I simply buy a new $200 carb, anybody have any suggestions as to what it might be? (And yes, I've read all through Sporsterpedia.)

Thanks.

sounds like it's rich just off idle. Is the needle jet in the right way? if it is in upside down you will run into the problem you describe. It happened to me the first time I worked on one of these carbs! Look at the pic in sportsterpedia and compare it to your carb, looking into yhe throat of the carb. The needel jet should be about 3-4 mm above the throat.

Look at the needle slide. Is the diagram bad? Hole in it or pinched?
With the AC off give it some throttle and ss if it moves up OK.
