Default timing with voes

i am installing voes which is currently missing lol my question is because i am unclear with the proper procedure of timing with the voes.... i have read that it needs to be connected but the rest is left for assumption .... i have an 83 xlx 1000 and i currently have the timing set at 38 degrees for thats where the pinging stops but since i will be installing voes im assuming that timing is going to change? is there anything i am missing or is it standard timing procedure without voes as with it? just trying to learn correct n keep her running correctly and safely .... any timing advice with voes is appreciated thank you guys

Default need keihin tuning walk through

hey guys ,
since my other post wasn't responded to maybe starting another new thread will catch someones attention. i have a 1983 xlx 1000 it has a 1977 keihin butterfly carb just rebuilt , 1/4 inch spacer , recently resealed motor , just installed voes switch , drag pipes with solid lollie pop baffles , starts up just fine runs like a raped ape pulling front tire and all now my problem is while trying to tune the carb after warm up idle adjusted up to set air/fuel ... no change in rpm cant seem to find its smoothest setting . if i crack the throttle in neutral i get a blue flame from the pipes (very small) and take a while to idle down almost as if cable is dragging i have checked numerous times but cant seem to find any obstructions that would bind throttle plate but its making my shifts extremely dangerous having such a high idle between gears any help would be appreciated

A lean idle mixture will have idle hang before settling in after a throttle blip.

A rich idle mixture will have idle dip low and then increase after a throttle blip.

A good setting will have rpm drop to idle and just sit there.

Drag pipes are not helping. Great for wide open. Not so great for anything else.

I know I just don't have hundreds for a 2-1 hence the solid lillipop baffle ... Thanks bud guess I'll search for intake leaks n play with the air fuel mix not having much luck with tuning

Perhaps your jetting is a little off. If the pilot jet is too small,it might not be allowing enough fuel to cause an idle variation while tuning the fuel screw.
What do you have for a pilot and main jet?
How many turns out,do you have your fuel screw out? If its any more than 3 full turns,you need to go up on the pilot at least one,maybe two sizes.
If your throttle cables are not adjusted properly,that can cause the idle to drop slowly,or not at all as well.
There should be a little play in both the push,and pull cables.

The carb is clean? Perhaps there is an obstruction in the pilot circuit causing a lean condition.

Vacuum leaks will do the same thing you describe too. Good luck,Chipper.

Carb is clean just rebuilt it ran good before I rebuilt it accel pump just leaked hence the rebuild main is 165 slow I believe was 45 It started acting up after adding voes n 1/4 inch spacer for heat dissipation ... Have had the worst intake leaks aslong as I've had it any tips on sealing intake? Rubber and seal with aircraft clamp

It's just over one turn out 1 1/4 maybe down to 1 turn bogs motor out n around 2 1/2 -3 turns bogs no rpm change between so I set it in the middle

It's set around 1 1/2 turns out 1 bogs it n around 3 turns bogs it but no rpm change between the two settings so set towards the middle .... Maybe fast idle adjustment ... Carb tuning is new to me

Perhaps the VOES setup is leaking? I have made gaskets from the roll of gasket material. Is there a gasket on both sides of the spacer?
1-1/2 turns out with a 45 pilot sounds okay.
Did you check to see if any of that RTV sealant made it into the carb anywhere? A small piece of that stuff in the right spot can cause all kinds of problems.
Was the diaphragm for the slide seated properly in its groove prior to putting the cover on? If that's out of place,it will cause your condition shown in the video.
After assembling the carb,without the engine running,you can push up on the slide,and it should come back down in a controlled manner,with a "whooshing" sound.
If it hangs up at all,it's not properly sealed somewhere,which will cause the fluttering,as well as tuning issues.
I'd start there,and double check all is correct.
If it was running fine prior to your recent work,it's definitely something simple like an air leak,or misaligned slide diaphragm.

There is a gasket on. Both side of spacer and oring on carb flange side didn't use tv carb went back together perfectly everything seated I think my problem is intake related and sucking air through aircraft style clamps n not properly tuned carb
