The combined pinion and pump gear length would then be too short by the depth of your step cuts. You'd need to add a spacer and to check that you didn't create gear tooth engagement conflicts. Not a bad idea. The short key engagement in the pinion has always looked iffy.

No pressure intended?

If you cut slots in both the pinion and the oil pump drive gear;
You are in fact locking them together.

That may 'help' just a little.
But the problem as I remember is the key on the pinion shaft is pretty short by the time it runs under the pinion gear.
There will still be that weak point there.

If you pulled the gears off, carefully extended the slot in the pinion shaft with a dremil,
You can install a second key under the pinion gear without the need to lock the gears together..

Envision if you will
Oil pump gear x section would be like this "L"
Pinion gear x section would be an "L" rotated 180 degrees counter clockwise
Forming a box so the 2 gears cannot spin independently

You'd have to add a spacer I'd think.
Cutting the fit would mean shortening both gears.
Then you have to fit the length as to not lose mating gear mesh.
I simply used a grid to create this so it's not scaled.
But it is a good representation of about how much length you'd lose.

You would lose some tooth area on the pump gear

Wouldn't you also lose some tooth area on the pinion gear?
You can't half moon it without cutting into some of the pinion gear teeth can you?
That takes away from the mesh at the cam.
That portion moves back against the now shorter pump gear leaving less pinion gear out front.. where the cam walks.

Depends on how deep you cut it to be effective... and affective.
Let's see some pics of the destruction if you try it.

Whatever you do to one gear, you have to do the opposite to the other and at the same equal distance inward.
Just as there is a machined flat surface between the 2 of them now.
So .020" length cut in any direction on 1 gear has to match to a .020" cut in the opposite centrifugal direction on the other gear.
That equates to a .040" loss in total length of the two.
Without a spacer, this loss in length will be seen on the gearcase cover side.

Looking at the wear marks on my old pump gear,
You may have remove or at least chamfer the back teeth on the pinion gear to keep the oil pump away from it.

It is confusing but in this example the total loss of length is .020".
A full length section of the first gear sits in the .020" cut out in the second gear.
