Hey all, new to the forum as a member, but I’ve been reading threads for a few months since I realized we were getting a bike from my wife’s Dad’s estate. It has been a crappy few months and it is all finally starting to get back to normal.

Her dad was the first owner and this bike has been in her family since before she was born. He always had Harleys and as the new ones came in, this old Sporty got put in the garage and forgotten about for a long time, but it was always my wife’s favorite. I intend on bringing this old gal back from the dead. It is a piece of her childhood that deserves to be saved. So, today I loaded it in my truck and hauled it 800 miles to its new home.

(The stuff below is all from a quick visual inspection. I have been driving for 10 hours and have to work tomorrow)

The good: It has been garage kept and out of the elements. Seats look good no cracks. The metal looks ok. Has some chipping and light rust, but not terrible. Doesn’t appear to have been opened up in years.

The bad: I have no idea what was last done to this bike. It was stored with gas in the tank and the gas smells pretty gnarly. Breaks are dead. Tires held air fine on the ride home, but they look a little dry rotted. No key.

I rebuilt a 70 C10 in the past, so I know my way around a wrench and now I’m looking forward to digging through this old gal.
Post this in the Iron head section. you will get a lot of help there.

The shop manual was the first thing I ordered, lol. Thanks for the heads up on the electrical diagnostics manual, I’ll order one next. As soon as I get a little cash together, I’m going to pick up a lift.

Welcome to the forum! Please, do post pics of the bike as soon as you can!

HDs have been a staple in my life, both growing up and now. My main HD that I currently flog is an '03 1200.

There are lots of talented and helpful folks on this forum. Getting your IH back on the road should be very doable, especially considering that.

One of the things I personally like most about HD (among others?) is the brute strength and reliability that comes as a result of the design being wonderfully simple... Basically a tractor engine haha.

Your going to want a center jack too for the tires, wheels, and forks. HF makes a good lift. They list three versions of it. I recommend item number. 68892 Stronger built C channel a little shorter - less tippy. $299.00 with coupon. Also their 1,800 pound ride on chock. $45.00 again with a coupon. A lot of what HF sells is not worth having. These items are exceptions though - shop wisely and you can save a ton. The chock that comes with the lift is garbage. You will want to replace it asap. The lift can be used as is though it's just awkward and will require two people to safely load and unload it. The key word here is safely. If you do use the stock chock put two pieces wood between the clamps as they will mare your wheels. Lift requires modification to make it easier and safer to use but once you have it it will pay for itself over and over. You have the tools pretty much (may have to pick up some specialty tools but you can do that as you go) good to go.

Thanks for the great advice. I’ve been eyeing that HF lift for a while. Couldn’t find it for $299 (checked their site and coupons). I’ll pick one up ASAP. I did, however, order that center scissor lift.

Go to the HF website and sign up for their coupons. They will send them to your e-mail. Best way to keep an eye out. With what I saved with their coupons the new chock and airjack for upgrades was virtually free. Worked for me.
