Thumbs up What next- The need for SPEED!

I have a 1200R & would like to get into the high 80s or 90s in HP. What can I do-relatively cheaply $1000. to get there. I've done a few mods already and I'm at mid 70's...

1- port the heads
2- add cams
3- Cycle Shack Slip ons

That should get you into the 90s. Call NRHS, Zippers, or Headquarters.

Hi Dogman,
If you are running with no baffles, you could be losing HP!

Ported heads and cams would be less than $1000 on the low side. Each shop would have their own opinions about what cams to use. No one here has as much experience as the above mentioned shops. Call them and see what they recommend. I think you'd be happy with any of them. They'll be more than happy to talk to you and give suggestions.

Your might be a little short with a $1000 limit.

Nallin Stage 2 "Big Valve" Heads
$ 850.00 per pair using customer supplied heads.
http://www.nallinracing.com/headworkbuell.shtml

That leaves you $150

SE Cam Kit P/N 25197-04 (specific for the 04-05)
249 / 249 duration
.551”/ .551” lift
http://www.surdyke.com/hd/catalog.asp
$ 263.75 from this source
$ 324.95 MSRP

I am not an expert, but I don't think the head work alone will get you the HP your looking for. Think your going to need heads and cam ... The parts selection needs to work as a matched "combo".

Puts you a little over your price ... I hope you are not planning on paying someone for the install.

Big valve heads aren't necessarily the ticket unless you are merely looking for high HP numbers. Smaller valves promote better torque. Stage I porting and a complementary set of cams on the new XB engine would be a VERY strong runner and a blast to ride in the twisties.

G'day Dogman

Just to back up what Crim has said

Nallins or Headquarters or Tilleys or a good local indy that ya can sit down and talk to.

The correct compression ratio is closesly linked to the cams you choose,the valve sizes and cams will mainly determine the VE (volumetric efficeincy) point or torque peak, which will give the motor it's character.

It's best to talk to whoever is gonna do the heads and go with their recomendations.

I have some customers that I put large cams and valves in and others that I keep smallish cams and stock valve sizes.
It depends on what the customer is using the bike for and his riding style.

I'm not gonna stuff Redshift 585's and a 2" inlet in a 1200 that gets riden 2 up on trips and never gets reved past 4500.

By the same token I wouldn't be using N2's and stock valves for an 88" drag motor.

Talk to a few shops and see what you feel is the best for you.

Ditto.
do the heads pick up 10 ponies..do the cams maybe 5 more...so the heads are the way to go...do you have the cycle shacks or some other slip ons?
