Default You can't tour on that!!!

Out for a ride yesterday and stopped at a mall to pick up a couple of things. When I came back to the bike, there was a couple in their 50's standing there looking at the sporty.

First comment: " we like your bike". I thanked them and said I did too
Second comment: " looks like it'd be great for running around town". I replied that it was, and it was also great for running across the country when we were so inclined.
Third comment: "you can't tour on that!!!!!". My response - why not??
That's where it got complicated. They were obviously riders, or had been, and their experience seemed to be with B-T or Wings. They had a million reasons why it just wouldn't work for touring. I had just as many reasons why it would.
I ride an 09 883C, with a Sundowner seat, windshield, bags and a Kuriakyn Grand tour trunk on the rear rack. When we're taking a long trip, my wife also straps a Butty-Buddy on the pillion. We've done a ton of 4, 5 and 600 mile days two up, through mountains, rain, heat...the bikes never missed a beat, We've never finished a day's riding in agony...in fact, we've always been very happy with the overall experience and the manners of the Sporty on the highway, and it's nimble handling in traffic.
We talked for probably 20 minutes...I doubt that they had any different feelings when we parted ways than when we started.
What is it with people and touring on a Sporty?? I guess I shouldn't complain too much...sometimes it's best to keep the secret about the Sporty being a fine touring ride to myself, I guess

People believe what they are conditioned to believe. If HD loaded a Sportster with bags, windshield & floorboards and included it in the "touring" model lineup, people would see the bike differently.

Those of us who outfit our bikes for touring just see the hidden virtues - the rest will continue seeing the Sportster as a bar-hopper. Their loss...

I've done 2300 miles in a week and 1280 miles in 4 days. It wasn't BMWer comfort, but I was still able to walk afterwards.

Most of the people that I ride with are on BTs. I use to get comments about stopping for gas every 100 miles, are you sure you can keep up and similar cracks. After a few rides the comments quickly stopped. They are now more like we need gas (the BT's), and man "what have you done to that thing, you pulled out and left us in the dust".

I too do a lot of touring on my sportster.I like being a little different than all the other baggers I ride with.

When we pull in for fuel its always my bike that gets the attention.

I set my ride up with a good seat, larger fuel tank and 6-speeds.Sure I dont have a stereo and large fairing, but my bike is very capable of all day rides.

I tour also. All highway, all day. It wasn't always an 88". I did plenty of miles on the original setup. I've made a few changes to make it more comfortable on long rides--for those rides that last a few weeks.

You can tour on just about anything from a Moped to a Goldwing.

It's not a question of If the bike will make it, it's more how much abuse can your body take in the proses.

If you are comfortable on a Sporty touring around, then more power to you I say.
I did it for years, but I have moved onto a touring bike as I got older.
