Ok I fooled with the sportster a little today, I changed the plugs to NGK drp8e’s, it’s still “ coughing” back thru carburetor, I did the “ idle drop” procedure, I turned mix screw all way in , it only decreased the idle but no stumbling, I turned mix screw out 1-2-3+ turns the idle increases but just “ even” out... still all the while blipping the throttle it’s still coughing back thru carb...sorry for crude explanation.. thank for replies

You did not mention (and your profile does not indicate) if this is an 883 model or 1200 model. So, I'm going to presume it's a 883C.

You indicated a fully STOCK engine except for the exhaust - No change in the Air Cleaner and no other engine upgrades. Is that right?

This makes me think that you have the idle set screw (not the Idle Mixtures Screw - IMS) set too high... Meaning, it's idling on the Transfer Ports instead of the Idle Port...

First, you have to get the engine fully warm - Like a 15-20 minute ride - not just sitting there idling.

Then, you set the Idle SPEED screw as low as possible (this closes the throttle plate) that allows the bike to idle without stopping - Then do the Idle Drop Method with the IMS.

If you can't get a stumble closing the IMS, I'm guessing the 44 may be too large for your 883C. Try putting the 42 back in there and see if the Idle Drop Method now works.

If you can't get a stumble opening the IMS (and you actually have a 1200 model), then I would suggest trying the 45 Idle Jet. After warming up the bike, keep closing the Idle SPEED Screw to the very lowest sustained idle possible and then try the Idle Drop Method again.

Did you check for exhaust leaks yet?

BTW, a teaspoon of oil is quite enough, IMO.

Ok, bumped the pilot jet up from a #44 to a #45 , took it for a 1/2 hour ride, adjusted the mix screw it’s out like 2 3/4 turns and adjusted idle around 800 rpm , it coughs every once in awhile but I’m willing to live with it , maybe in future I’ll play around with different needles? Thanks for replies

Idle should be 1,000 rpm, ± 50.

Coughing once in a while is OK. If it doesn't do that, it's probably too rich.

If the engine doesn't die when you screw the IMS all the way in your throttle blade is open too far and you're idling off the transfer ports. Your tuning is going nowhere 'til that is corrected.

There's nothing wrong having the IMS out up to 4 turns. It needs to be adjusted for best idle and not adjusted to match where you read someone else had theirs' set.
