Opened this thread up again because I just saw the Indian FTR 1200, a really sweet looking bike, and I know the regular Scout can run circles around the Sportster. If they put that thing into production I think it will be a huge nail in the Sportsters coffin.
As I have said several times in this thread, I do not want to see the Sportster line discontinued but then I am 60 come June and HD can not expect me to be buying to many more bikes. I know they need to attract young blood to survive as a viable company.
But I think I have seen the future in the FTR, a lot of the young kids are into scramblers and bikes they can take offroad.

Over here (UK), a lot of kids aren't interested in any bikes not just HDs. My nephew & eldest niece's interest goes as far as watching SOA or having their picture took on my sporty!of the other 3 only one even bothered to learn to drive a car

It seems the desire to drive is not just a UK thing, it is a growing trend over here in the USA for the younger generation not to drive. A car is now seen as a huge expense instead as a vehicle of personal freedom. and with services like Uber being everywhere they just dial up a ride when they need one. That is not going affect the motorcycle industry but the Automobile industry also.
When I grew up everyone was trying to get there license just as soon as they came to age. Once we got our license we saved up a few hundred dollars and got a beater, a lot of those beaters were kinda scary. There were no regulation on them such as smog inspections they had to pass. Insurance was a lot cheaper, like my first policy as 38 bucks fir a year. Gas was 20 cents a a gallon. Imagine that, for a buck seventy five you could have 5 gallons of gas and be covered with insurance for a week. Compare that to what gas and insurance cost today and you will see why a car is not considered a must have item to kids that can get cheap public transportation or Uber rides.
I have read some interesting articles about that trend and how the values of what the younger generations are placing on the items they need today. Smart phones are the number one item sought after. Something we once thought only existed in The Jetsons world is now a necessity. We depend so much on them, and look at how much more the youth of our days uses them. They use apps on their phones to pay for stuff now. Sheesh I tuned my bike with a phone app. Anyway that is part of a shift in what is perceived as important. Learning to drive is not a huge need anymore.
In relation to that point is the fact that 40 years ago owning a motorcycle was considered a form of transportation, now days it is seen as a luxury item that gets pulled out on the week end. But then 40 years ago a 1200 cc bike was a HUGE road bike and a 350 was seen as an exciting bike to be able to afford. Times have changed, My dualsport 185 would be laughed at if I pulled up to a bike night nowdays, back then it was a cool bike.

How times have changed. I can not say they have been for the better. It would be funny to see what our kids will be discussing as change in 50 years.

Every kid I knew in the 70s couldn't wait to get their own bike or car. Public transport hardly ever ran early or late enough to get you to work or back home on time. Our parents encouraged it as it was a PITA to be a running us all over the place. My parents weren't keen on bikes, there was a 250cc limit for learners but if I paid for a bike & insurance up to 175cc they would help with the cost of a helmet, boots, gloves, leather jacket & waterproof gear.A 650 Triumph or BSA was a big bike, Big Twins were 1200cc! A couple of weeks ago I went to a bike meet & there was an early GT750 Suzuki there, it looked tiny compared to the huge modern bikes around it. 45 years ago this was a big bike!
