Default Starter gaskets 74 XLH1000

Replacing the whole starter system with high torque starter and solenoid. I have found the gasket for the starter housing and the solenoid, but can't find anything about the starter motor to housing gasket. The one I pulled off the bike looks to have a gasket that online sites say is for 81 and up and I can't find a direct reference to it in my parts manual. Can someone point me in the right direction?

I can't give a definitive answer on the gasket but here's some info that may (or may not ) help.

Harley used 2 different starters in '74. A prestolite or a hitachi. PIctures from another thread of yours shows you have a prestolite.

My parts book shows a gasket with the prestolite. HD #31488-77
Cometic gasket C9333.

No gasket is shown with the hitachi.

The starter housing that the motors bolt to are different.
Prestolite threads are 1/4-28. (maybe 1/4-20)

Hitachi threads are smaller 10-24.

So will the hi torque starter you're buying fit your housing?

Yes sir. I did know to measure the starter body to confirm which brand i have. It is also stamped with P-66A indicating Prestolite. I have ordered the prestolite pattern high torque starter.

Here's the skinny: 1967 to 1976 parts catalogs do not list a gasket. I've had my hands on a couple of 1967-73 -- none had a gasket. I just finished rebuilding and installing the prestolite in my wife's 1967 XLH. The studs were 1/4-20.

This doesn't mean the info you've gotten is wrong - it means it is for later bikes. The part number needspeed gave you is -77, which means it didn't go into use until 1977. The cases changed between 1976 and 1977.

In other words, for your 74 a gasket isn't needed, unless you don't have a 1974 motor in your 1974 frame (yes, it happens).

However, if your prestolite is cocked at all and doesn't seat flat against the housing -- find out why. Most common cause is a poorly installed helicoil. A LOT of people over torque the starter mounting studs and an equal number do not remove the housing to install a helicoil -- usually making one or both studs cocked.
