Default Throttle plate

After reading Sportsterpedia for the info i needed, i cannot set the throttle plate anywhere near to a point between the idle port and the transfer ports.
When closed, the throttle plate just about covers the transfer port closest to the idle port.
With the slightest movement on the throttle plate, (where i would expect the tick-over setting to be), the next 3 holes are uncovered.
Anyone give help/guidance?

Are you saying the blade won't close far enough to sit between the idle port and the transfer ports even with the idle speed screw backed all the way out?

First, make sure your throttle cables or another external mechanical issue isn't the problem. That's most probable.

But, sometimes you may need to center the blade in the carb throat. Sometimes the blade was never centered properly, sometimes they've been taken apart and not centered properly. If that's the case the blade can hang up in the throat and not quite close. It can drive you nuts trying to get a good idle and off idle transition.

If you get to that point you loosen the screws that hold the blade to the shaft, open and close the blade a couple times to let the blade center itself in the carb throat and then tighten the screws.

Yep, as i say the plate only just covers the transfer ports when closed.
I've centered the plate and carb is completely off the bike.
The plates nowhere near being in the middle of the ports and i just cannot see how it ever could do.

Accelerator pump interfering?

I hate to say the obvious but it's a matter of finding what's limiting the shafts' rotation.

Nothings limiting shaft rotation, at least as it is now it's stopping just before the transfer ports!
If it rotated more it would only go past them.
I can't find any info on this in the FSM or Clymer manuals so i'm presuming it's right as it is and as Rocketmangb say's, i'll just have to balance it between the mixture screw and the throttle stop screw.(as i had it before then!)
It would be interesting to see another carb though, and see if there was any differences.
Thanks to all who replied, cheers.

??? The blade should sit between the idle port and the transfer ports. From what you posted it sounded like the blade needed to move (close) further toward the idle port to do that. With a normal idle setting if you look into the carb throat from the manifold side thru you should just see the idle port. Look in from the air cleaner side you should just see the transfer ports. Did I misunderstand what you posted?

Here's the pic from the SP:

The edges of the throttle plate may be slightly angled to allow a parallel seal when the plate is fully closed - The plate can be put on the wrong way - you might want to double check that...

In any event, the goal is to get the throttle plate 'as closed as possible' and 'as close as possible' to setting between the idle port & the transfer ports - the concept is to 'keep the transfer ports from feeding fuel during idle' so that they respond with added fuel when the throttle is rotated open above an idle...

It's a balancing act to get the idle & transfer conditions right:
Size of the Idle Jet
Idle Mixture Screw setting
Idle Stop Screw setting (which sets the Throttle Plate positioning)
The float bowl level can affect these settings

All of these are inter-active and adjusting them correctly (balancing them) must be done on a warmed up engine...
You cannot get these right with the engine cold...

==============

Two steps back --------- What specific operational problem are you addressing?

No real operational problem, i just noticed where the plate was closing when i fitted my new air cleaner so thought i would take carb off completely to check.
Hope these pics help explain better.
Ignore the slightly damaged plate screw, i had the wrong screw bit in at first!

Slightly open,

Almost closed,

Fully closed,
