I loved that article.

If Loud Pipes Save Lifes, then the opposite must be true.

You'd expect "Goldwing Riders to be dropping like flies"

By your OWN admission here the loud pipes did NOTHING for you, UNTIL you went out of your way to goose the motor. And as pointed out, in that circumstance the horn would have worked just as well. Hell, so would the brake (since you seem like you wanted to use your right hand instead of your left).

So thanks for making our argument for us.

I'd say that for every life they save by allowing them to be heard by someone who didn't see them, they take a life by startling someone into doing something stupid. People jump when they get startled, and that could mean sudden, unexpected lane changes or stops.

Anyway, I don't think they save lives, just egos.

And an AIR HORN wouldn't accomplish the same thing?

Kev, VERY good comment.

I'd argue the horn would have worked better because it probably would have startled the guy less and not made him as angry. If he was a nutjob, he might have done something dangerous on purpose if he was angry enough. Safe riding should have steps in the order of importance like this:

1) Ride within your abilities - we are our own worst enemies.
2) Know your surroundings and stay out of dangerous situations - other vehicles are our second worst enemies.
3) Be seen if someone is wandering towards you. This could mean a throttle blip or it could mean honking the horn - they both have the same effect. However, pissing someone off could be counterproductive to your health and safety.
4) Wear safety gear as a last defense in the event of a crash.
