The small bag behind the pass back rest. Not much of a kit though...
Multi tool, adj wrench, couple Allen wrenches, 2-1 screwdriver, wire ties, electrical tape, fuses, wire ties, water.

Was there ever an optional factory tool kit as the metric bikes had?

My '05 has a tool kit. Actually looks a decent bit of kit, sort of Snap-on quality. Makes you wonder where Harley expected people to put them though, maybe in your jeans pocket, or somewhere equally safe.
I'm sure my earliest Harley ('90 FXRT) had one, but can't remember where it lived, maybe under the swing-up riders seat or in a fairing pocket.
Metrics come with crap quality kits, but always have somewhere to store them!

The metric bike tool kits, while not high quality, had enough tools to service the particular bike, including removing the wheels and adjusting the shock preload.

I just looked up tool kits for Sportsters and aftermarket (supposed replica of H-D) they seem rather generic, with the 3/4" being largest size wrench. Did something more model specific come with a new bike?

Bungee'ed in the gap between the number plate and the sissy bar. Enough tools do most things exept remove the clutch or the crank!

The most complete set of tools I've ever seen came standard with my BMW R100 which I bought in '81. It was of high quality and you practically could tear the bike apart with it. In the back underneath the seat was even a first aid kit!

Man, was I in for a surprise when I traded it in for my first Harley...not even a screwdriver...
