Analog to digital speedometer install...

Hey guys, my 1st real post here. I know this question has probably been covered but couldn't find it in the search with my phone so here goes...

Picked up a 2000 xlh 883 Hugger 2mnths ago. Original owner added a 1250 kit, it gave it some balls, but removed the stock speedo and gauges. I just picked up a set up thru Ebay but need to return it cause it's for a xl Custom, not a Hugger.
I was planning on going to an aftermarket digital set up next year anyway so I figured lemme get it now instead of spending extra money needlessly.

My question is how hard is it to wire in a new set up, as well as keep the gauge lighting...I'm gonna assume the kits don't just plug into the stock harnesses or have plugs that'll mate with a stock system.
Since my bike's a 2000 I'm pretty sure I don't have an O2 sensor or fuel sensor to worry about, just the wiring for the electronic speed sensor...thanks for any help. It's been over 20yrs since I rebuilt a bike. Last one was a 76 FXE I stripped to the frame and redid myself.

Normally, aftermarket digital speedos come with a sensor to be mounted near to the wheel spokes (cast wheel) or a magnet - that will create pulses to the speedo - then you set the speedo according to the number of pulses at a particular speed - they usually include instructions for doing this...

You may or may not be able to use that signal to feed the speedo - read the speedo instructions carefully - don't ruin the speedo trying to feed a signal to it that is too high in voltage...

Can't really tell you anything definitive. It all really depends on what you buy. I bought a cheapo one off Ebay, and, well, you get what you pay for. I didn't even get instructions. Quality setups like Dakota Digital might have plug n play options. Sucks the speedo was removed (I hope you used that as leverage to get a good deal), cause the turn signal auto shut off is tied into it, I think.
