Default buell slide resting position vs sportster.

I have a buell and sportster 2000 m2 and 2001 sportster. When looking down the guts of the carbs the buell slide sits 3mm above these little notches in the carb body, while the sportster sits flush with them. The last numbers on the sporty carb are 95-a, while the buell is 98-y. The buell is too lean at 1/4 throttle yet rich at 1/4 throttle when the sporty carb is on it. The buell slide has free movement and the height difference is dictated by the carb body. Can anyone tell me what the purpose is for this height difference.

Have you disassembled the original Buell Keihin CV40 carb?

Have you checked the slide diaphragm? The jet sizes (Pilot & Main)? The Idle Mixture Setting? The needle part number? The enrichener circuit? The float level?

Here's the Sportsterpedia section on the CV40 carbs:
Sportsterpedia - Getting Ready to Tune Your CV40 Carb

I would expect either carb to be tunable to the bike if the carb parts are properly working... But you'll have to disassemble to find out if they are...

Can you post a couple comparison photos? (not photobucket, please)...
