I had a similar problem a few years ago with an aftermarket cap and it did something similar. Had to do the same.

Plenty of aftermarket parts for Sportsters that work physically, just make sure it also works for your year and specific model.

Maybe others had different models that the cap works fine with, maybe they sent you the wrong cap.

Why not post up relevant details and maybe some pictures of what you have?

My 2009 XL1200C did not come with a flush mount cap, by your description sounds like you have the chrome piece in the center of the tank. That may require certain caps.

Thanks for the help. I do have the chrome piece in the middle. I wanted a cap that is not flush with that. I will have to look at the venting issue.
