Default Putting the Sport back in the Sportster

The Wife bought me a Retirement Project Bike, a 1977 XLH1000 POS. 3 1/2 years to rebuild/restore and VERY HAPPY with it. She's got a 04 XLH 1200C. Something that really bothered me was the fact I, on my 77 1000 XLH could keep up with her to 70 mph. Hmmm, what's wrong with this picture. Did my research. Found new, unused Hammer 570 cams for a price I couldn't pass up. My Wife actually did the cam swap, with very little help from me. I Test Rode it and adjusted the CV-40 and Test Rode it again. Close, but no cigar. Picked up a Mikuni HSR 42, jetted it for the 1200, checked the float height and put it on. Warm it up and adjust the carb. Late this morning we went for a 2 Sportster ride together. Took her a little while to get used too the new power. The Mikuni slide clack made her a little uneasy but she got used to it real quick. Headed back home, she led the way. At the last stop light, she took off VERY quickly. HOLEY GLOCKAMOLE she walked away and I couldn't catch up till she got off the throttle. One Fist Pump and a huge smile the rest of the way home. One VERY happy Lady. The next time, we'll see how she stacks up against my 100HP, 125 Tq 105" Dyna. Just got a feeling she'll keep up.

NO head work is correct. They use all of the OEM valve train, including the fixed length push rods. It was an easy swap.

570's are bolt-ins on '04 and later, the engines with OE beehive valve springs. Earlier engines need valve springs that will accommodate the .570 lift.

well, the iron is no match for the evo without work. my 74ch has work done but my 01 runs circles around it even before i up the ponies on her. gearing makes a big diff.
i had a 74fxe also and it would walk away from the ch at higher speeds, sportster faster on take off but high speed roll on goes the the shovel. funny thing about that ole shovel, sure made a dude on a new beemer 900rs hang his head in shame and i did not give him all she had. that on top of shovels having crappy heads.
