Default hot start and starter "coughs"

got an 05 1200R that runs perfect for stock but when I have to restart it when it's hot it usually kicksback against the starter when the starter has only slightly begun to spin the clutch drum. It makes an awful sound I don't know how to avoid it other than tapping the start circuit with my key (I have momentary key start) to get the rotation aligned differently so it doesn't jam back against my bendix gear. sometimes that don't even work. Why does ignition fire on first rotation? Couldn't it wait til 2nd or 3rd at least? It's firing too quickly I think.what's up.

Many yrs ago we'd change a connection in the right handlebar switch assy to let the starter spin the engine with the kill switch off. Hit the starter, kill switch off, and then turn the kill switch on as soon as the engine is turning on the starter. Or start as usual with the kill switch on.

You can probably do this on your pre canbus Sportster. I'd do it on my canbus EFI bike if I could. It was a simple work around for something Harley's been doing wrong for years.

Default Thnx guys now I know I'm not crazy.

I did find that interesting. I'm going to look into maybe reflashing the ICM with fresh or updated code. As for the the post before, I agree that could be a solid workaround but I done a wire tuck on the bike last winter and part of that tuck involved the removal (or relocation I should say) of the starter and the kill buttons and wires. They come out of the harness down by the starter now and they are wired into a 3way keyswitch with momentary start. So when I am done riding, I just turn the key off. but you know what I mean, though.
