Glad you are solved.
IXL2Relax (and Hippysmack) has a ton of more info in Sporsterpedia, but post 1 of this thread has some basics.

Voltage can tell you a lot.

Battery tested good.
What did you do to TEST THE BATTERY that you thought it was good???

I suppose I should have recommended checking the battery anyway...

Here's the Sportsterpedia section on checking the battery cables, voltages and grounds:

Please report your SPECIFIC METER READINGS from those tests...

I used positive probe from meter to positive battery and the same with ground. I know now that was wrong but then what should I have done?

I think the key-on voltage reads in post 7 were so very low, it did not make sense, other than a very poor ground or pinched wire, etc.

Looking back, the battery probably had more than one bad cell. The other 4 (or less?) greatly overcharged, but faded instantly with load.

Anything is possible. I'm just glad to have it running again. Now maybe I can get some sleep not having it in my head as to what it might be!

I had a battery do that to me once. Started fine, parked it and an hour later, no start. Had strong lights until I hit the start button, then everything went out.

I got my trailer and picked it up. By the time I got back to it, it was dark out. Of course the trailer lights that worked when I put it away, didn't work.

Turned the lights on the bike minus the headlight and used a bungie to hold the brake pedal down so it was brighter and drove it home.

Glad you got yours sorted out.
