Hello everyone. Thank you,for allowing me to join . Appreciate it. I have some questions on the fluid change.i foolishly took out the front plug,prior to reading this. It does seem ok tho. Have not put it back in yet. Bike has been sitting for years. However ,the casing looks different then the one in the post. Says 68' in the stamping. Would like to post a picture..if I figure out how.

putting the plug back in is when you need to be careful.don't over tighten it.

Hi, so draining the oil to change the clutch cable assembly out and I've got a large nut that's hard to get at bc of the line running right against it, and then a smaller hex head that pops up and is threaded and comes out. I took it out. No oil came out. Hoping I don't have to try to get the other hex off and, well, maybe a little concerned that the guy who put the new clutch cable in (that I'm fixing) didn't put any oil in the primary.
this is a 1977 sportster and I'm putting in a hydroclutch. Any quick thoughts?

You don't need to drain the oil first. Just put a pan on a cookie sheet to catch the oil and pull all the cover screws but one and use the remaining screw to control the oil flow while removing the cover. I don't bother with the one screw, you can just hold the cover in place by hand while you remove the last screw. You will need a second cookie sheet to catch the drips from the primary cover after you separate it from the motor. Do not be alarmed when parts fall out when you remove the cover. There is a large brass washer on the starter drive and a smaller steel washer (maybe) on the shifter shaft. And a couple of alignment bushings for the cover.

They don't call me Ironhead Rick just because I'm hard headed

Thanks, no oil came out when I pulled the small screw but there was oil in there thankfully. May have other problems though. Some metal flakes in the bottom of the primary and a lot of surface rust on the plate holding the clutch. I posted a couple of pics on the hydroclutch thread bc I was in the midst of trying to install one.
