Default Clutch: Who's on first? ME! and I'm stuck.

I've been taking the bike out a lot lately and aside from needing a new throttle cable, I've come close enough to trust my iron on long rides.

New AGM battery, clean genny, new coil & cables, wiring, spark plugs, tires, fluid and cable changes (minus the throttle), almost dialed carb and a 2.5 year old rebuilt motor......from the inside out, the bike is almost there.

It's a 76XLH.

Yesterday I was having a nice ride when I hit a red light, it was a good light because I actually found neutral this time on my rolling stop attempt. When I took off, I dropped into first like always went to shift up into second and nothing, the cross-bar (remember it's a 76) would go up but not engage anything. I tried to pop it down again as if trying to put it in first to see if it would click or something, but nothing. This whole time I'm stuck in 1st holding up traffic trying to knock it up to 2nd.

1st gear (which I'm locked in) can ride normal. I pulled over shut down, jiggled the cross-bar a few times light, a few times hard, and still nothing. There is some friction on the up & down pull, not free play (aside from the typical bar play), but no engagement.

Holding the clutch in and leaving the bike off, I pushed it across the busy street I was on into an alley. Note: My pull over, shut down, cross-bar check, push across the street all was in front of a Honda bike & quad dealership. I even pushed right past a group of mechanics by the rear service entrance, some whispering, no offered assistance.

I rode it home via alleys in 1st...that was a treat.

Tonight I went out, jacked it up and did a fresh clutch adjust per manual directions (it always performs well after that), but nothing.

I'm still locked in 1st with no ideas. I've been planning to switch to right side shift, but not until I know I can get through this. I want to switch on my own terms.
I searched the forum, online, and manuals for clutches locked in gear but other situations seem different than mine. Does anyone have any advice why the clutch won't work?

Thanks for any reads or help!

thee only exturnal weak spot i can think of is part 13 in the picture thats attached....bolt 14 can losen up,or be striped causing 13..to not grip the shifter shaft...you will have to remove your kicker and sprocket cover to examine this end of linkage..if you get it down to where you can see the lever and shaft..move 13..and see if its striped or if its good an dtight on the shaft...if its tight..its in the tranny...if you get luck and its just a lose bolt..let me know i have the correct setup..when you tighten back up...hope it helps..I've seen alot of spleened shafts and there counter parts striped out...hope its just 13...

Thanks for the reply, I'll give a look in the morning. I did take the cover off yesterday and was good until the pin/clip (11 & 12). I figure if it is the shaft I'll just go ahead with the right side shift conversion, but I'm really hoping it's only that bolt you pointed out!

Thanks again, I'll post when resolved either way it ends up.

p.s. popping that cover off motivated me to toss in a 23 tooth sprocket. Work just snowballs sometimes when the doors are open

...who am I kidding, I was out there checking the minute I hit post on the last note.

It looks like I'm going in and the tranny is coming out. Everything on the outer is as it should be, minus the dirt. If I have to mingle with or even change the shaft I might as well convert it.

We've been having amazing weather here in Chicago, it's been killing me seeing my bike parked.
