On the 2nd generation EFI Sportsters there is a temp sensor in the rear cylinder head. If you have PowerVision you can monitor it. Temps can drop considerably (50 deg F) with better fuel and timing tables.

OK; not on stock EFI models. You can add something that allows you to read the engine temp; as you can on carby mods.

Never needed an oil cooler on my Sportster living in Lancashire! I did put one on my Triumph Bonneville T140 after frying the top end racing a Pontiac GTO & a Honda 750/4 round the M25 in the 80s!

My Shovelhead (1980 80") needed an oil cooler. Even with a Lectron and good jetting oil temps would run 290F in the oil tank. It got a Lockhart cooler with thermostat. Then it stayed 220-230F. A friend had a 74" Shovel with the same cooler without the thermostat, it would over cool in lower temps. His wife made him a cover for it he could put on or take off. That fixed over cooling in cooler weather.

I never saw my BT Evo go over 250F.

PowerVision and some time spent mapping took ~50F off my Sportsters' rear head temps while cruising. Heat poured off it stock.

My other bike, BMW R9T, came with a thermostatically controlled oil cooler as OE.

Oil coolers are radiators. They need thermostats just like water cooling needs a thermostat.

I was a bit of a hooligan up til then! No speed cameras on the M25 in Hertfordshire & Essex. (if there were I got away with it). It was a very hot day & I'd ridden down from Fleetwood, Lancashire to the Kent custom bike show. Got halfway through the Dartford tunnel when i felt the bike become sluggish. 2 plumes of smokefrom the cocktail shakers & hot oil pouring out of the blown base gasket all over my boots.
