I adjusted the cables at the jam nuts.
That explains a lot

I suspect that most throttle and clutch cables do not get the attention necessary for a long life

It sounds like you solved it: throttle cable not opening it up enough. That said, what probably made her notice it was what you said earlier, that it was cold and the bike wasn't fully warmed up. When I first got mine I noticed if I took it out and hit this one north-south highway there were times it seemed pretty lethargic when riding into the wind, if it were blowing 20+ mph, which it often does out here in SW Oklahoma. Usually I jump on the 70 mph east-west highway instead, and don't have any issues.

Once fully warmed the bike (2006 883, mostly stock) definitely has more punch.

Thanks for posting. I might just have a look at my throttle cables.

I do indeed. And I do appreciate your help. I'm trying to do this one on my own. But I do know where to go if I fail.

remove the air cleaner and look at the throttle plate to see if it goes fully horizontal.
fuel flow and rpm is controlled by the Throttle Position Sensor TPS. Tells the computer what the motor is looking for.
