Default 09 Nightster Valve Rattle??

A little help here.....
This is my first street bike. I bought it in May 09 with 7 miles on it. As of yesterday, I just tripped 3,000 miles. I have performed the 1,000 recommended maintenance...but I did it at 2,000 miles (miscommunication between the salesman and me)
Yesterday while I was riding, I noticed a "Rattle-Rattle-Rattle" from the LEFT side of the bike when I hit the throttle.
I had never heard this type of rattle before. It sounded VERY similar to a car when the valves rattle.
It only happened when I had RPM's on the engine....around 2-3k RPM.....and then I hit the throttle.
So basically, I'm cruising along at 2-3k RPM.....hit the throttle...and right at the beginning of the ramp up on the engine rpm....it would make the "Rattle-Rattle-Rattle" (similar to the car valve rattle sound) from the LEFT side of the bike and then go away immediately.

Now, yes...the bike is under warranty and I could run it to the dealership and drop it off so that they could look at it. However, if I could post here and save me that long trip and inconvenience....I would deeply appreciate that.

Yesterday's conditions:
The engine had been running for awhile. Yesterday was the hottest day that I've run the bike. 86 and humid.

Any ideas? Is this "normal"?
I hope what I've explained makes sense.

Pre-detonation?, what octane are you running, I use 92 and have very little.

Sounds like you're using the wrong octane.

I only run 92 octane and I try to only buy my gas from "brand name" gas stations.....ie Mobil/Irving/Shell

Granted....this could be a bad batch of gas...don't know.

This may be a long shot, but it's simple enough to check... make sure the gas cap is on tight. Seems loose caps can make some noises that sound more alarming than it really is.

Sometimes you can get bad gas. I wouldn't worry too much. Run through the gas in your tank and fill up again with at least 92 octane, see what happens.

Like Shaft said.. check for rattles from gas cap etc.

Try mixing in some AVGAS (aviation fuel) if you have a supplier near you and then run it. AVGAS has a high octane and will not deteriorate like regular gas will.

Let us know what you find.

You're hearing pinging, not rattling. My 2000 did that when I ran under 3000 rpm in 5th when I first had her. I did a 1500 mile trip, drove the heck out of her and it stopped? Still not good to lug your bike. Since your's is a 2009 it came from the factory on the lean side, so it's prone to do that. Just keep your rpm up and it will go away.
