New Owner
Hey everyone. I just bought a 2005 Sportster 883 with 11k miles. It is a project bike. Seems mechanically “ok” but, has been neglected in the maintenance department. So, what oil filter, oil, and primary fluid is everyone using?
Any advice, suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

Be sure to get a Factory Service Manual AND a Factory Parts Catalog for your bike.

Lol about the oil!! I can probably figure that one out. How about oil filters? Anything other than HD? Cheaper?

Wix filters are popular.
Wix 57148 (black)
Wix 57348 (chrome)
For the Napa number, leave off the “5”

How many miles do you ride per year? If you save $10 on the filter and ride 10k, that's $20 per year. I would just run what your insides tells you to and not fret the price. I always ran HD Black 'cause they were $8 at the time. A mechanic I trust once told me that he doesn't care what oil/filter you run, just change it per the specs. Got me 91k out of my '05 Sporty before I sold it and that same advice gets me 200k on my cars. YMMV. How about some pics. '05/883 was my first Sporty. Lets see yours!

Wix filters are good quality. Not necessarily cheaper. Not everyone has a HD dealer close by. Wix may be easier to find locally at an auto parts store including NAPA.

I have the same thing going on. I traded a guy and ended up with a '05 Sportster 883 low with 3,900 miles on the clock. I would call it a borderline barn find. First thing I did was find a used service manual.
As for oil I went with Mobil 1 V-Twin oil and a WIX filter from a local parts store. Nothing against Harley Davidson since that is what I run in my Fat Boy, I just happened to be at the parts store for something else and grabbed the oil.

Wix nappy gold in my diesel.
All their filters are good in my experience.
