Default 36 mm zenith bendix

anyone running a 36mm bendix zenith on a 1,000 cc ironhead? went to rebuild one of my swap meet finds and discovered it's 36mm. will it run good?

I can tell you about some of the differences between the 38 and 36 bendix that I have.
The 38 is what came stock on a '74 xlh. The 36 was givin to me and I don't know where it came from and I've never used it.

Aside from the venturi size the other main difference that might affect the way it runs is the number of secondary idle discharge ports. These are the holes that get uncovered by the throttle plate at part throttle settings.

The 38 has 3.(in addition to the idle adjustment screw hole).
The 36 has 2.(in addition to the idle adjustment screw hole).

The air cleaner screw bosses on the 36 are smaller and I've heard prone to breaking.

The 36 does not have a bowl vent hole that the 38 has. I can't see why it would need it though.

The 36 should have more air velocity thru the venturi but flow less total CFM.

So to answer your question- will it run good?
Sorry, I don't know.

It was only standard equipment for a year. Must have been a reason. Could your bike run fine on it? Probably.

smaller venturi equals better throttle response, but, a Possible [possible] loss of top end [WFO only] performance.
For putting about, I always choose a Smaller [relatively] venturi. which, in todays world a 38 already is.
YMMV
But, I bet most would Never know the Difference...Honestly.

Idle discharge ports/ A friend had a new '72 XLH, his Bendix had an "A" stamped on it. I had a new '73 XLCH and had a "B" stamped on it part number. His carb only had 2 ports, mine had 4 ports if I remember correctly.

this post was from a few years back hahaha, I did use that carb, it has adjustable main, I put it on a 74" shovelhead, runs just fine, starts really easy with kicker, don't notice any power loss at WOT, runs right up to 5,550 rpm and still climbing in 4th. should run fine on a ironhead.
