Look at the "horns" where the tank mounts at the front. I think that may be the SuperGlide tank. Mine from an earlier post in this thread is a Roadster tank and the mounts at the front are different from this one.

Mick by 82 they used the super glide type mount that required the saddle mount I described as this was on my bike when I bought it from the dealer in 1983 as a left over . Nikki

Well, I pulled out the '79-'85 factory parts book and factory service manual.

The XLS had the banana tank from 1980-1982. From 1983-1985, the XLS had the big tank with the center console. The 1982 XLS tank has a different part number and different mounting brackets than the 1980 & 1981 setup.

The same banana tank and brackets that are listed for the 1982 XLS are also listed for the early 1983 XLH. The factory service manual pictures a 1983 XLH with the banana tank, and it has the "Superglide-style" horn mount in the front.

So, it appears that the banana tank for Sportsters came in two forms, one for 1980-1981, and one for 1982-1983. I'm sure the later model would also fit 1984 & 1985, but it must have not been available those years. Therefore, it's entirely possible that a number of 1983 XLH's left the factory with the banana tank.

It makes sense that there would be two versions of this tank, since the Sportster frame changed in 1982 and the other Sportster tanks don't fit the entire 1980-1985 span either.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it (especially if you don't know what you're doing). Most Sportster problems are owner-induced.

83XLX thanks I never paid much attention to the 80-81 XLS as how the tank mounted as I was one of two 82 XLS's in my home town and no one in our group rode any other sportsters . Nikki

I just picked up an 83 Sportster from a fella that was needing money for his other bike. Its got that big tank with the center console tach. The speedo is missing the bike is in numerous pieces at the moment. I thought the tank was rather unusual but I'm going to clean it up and see what I can do with it.

WHEN YOU WISH YOU HAD THE PICTURE- Back in the late 70s my Friend Geneo R I P', had a 73 XLH, He Installed a Superglide Gas Tank, A Boatail Seat Section, Panted it White with a thin Blue and Red Stripes, Invader Wheels, Somehow it all Fit, it was like Some BiCentennial Creation.. it Worked
