Is a Buell a Harley ?

Artificial controversy.
That's the kind of question
you would see on the front cover
of a m/c magazine that had nothing
else to write about.

I'm pretty sure that Harley owns the whole Company now. Eric is the CEO and head designer and has more money than he can spend. Cool.

Not a big deal, but it's Erik... with a 'k'.

Were it not for the XL engine in my Buell, I doubt I would have been interested in getting one.

Even though I've never owned a Harley, I have pride of ownership for an American brand, and I found the dichotomy of air-cooling and push-rods in a cutting edged chassis to be quite appealing.

The Harley engine in my Buell is exotic to a guy like me who was raised on overhead cams and inline-4s.

Were you saying this in my favor or against me???

I was aware that EB worked for H-D at the start and did what he did with the Buell...

Erik Buell is the founder of the Buell Motorcycle Company. Buell left Harley in 1982 to pursue his dream of building his own racing motorcycle. That led to the production of the Buell RR1000, utilizing a Harley-Davidson engine. Buell’s small company expanded to a major manufacturer when Harley-Davidson bought into Buell in 1994.

When it was introduced in 1988, the RR1200 caused quite a sensation, with its streamlined bodywork, rubber-mounted Harley engine, Buell-designed four-piston front brakes, and a Works Performance rear monoshock mounted under the engine.

Over the next several years, Erik Buell refined those concepts into his own line of street motorcycles, while maintaining close relations with Harley. And in the ’90s, Harley began to invest in the motorcycle company its former engineer founded, eventually increasing its ownership to 100percent of the Buell brand by 2003.

Buell eventually moved away from the day-to-day running of the company to focus on design and development of future Buell models. His motorcycle company’s meteoric rise from a single two-stroke race bike to a flourishing manufacturer in such a short period of time is one of the most remarkable stories in all of motorcycling.

Buell is the evil Harley Twin. Love the new 1125R but don't relish dropping the motor to change my spark plugs!

Okay, I'm hearing three basic arguments here:

Argument 1: A Buell is a Harley because it's sold in H-D dealerships
Nonsense. I can walk into a Harley dealership near me and buy a brand new Aprilia Tunono. Surely, no one here considers an Aprilia to be a Harley.

Argument 2: A Buell is Harley because it's owned by HDI
Seriously? If you had a bowling ball that was made in 1975 by AMF, is that a Harley, too? Or what about when Harley owned Holiday Rambler? Go find someone who just bought a new Lamborghini and let then know they have a nice Volkswagen.

Argument 3: A Buell is a Harley because it uses a Harley-based engine
Okay, now we're just grasping at straws. Is a Shelby Cobra a Ford Mustang? Is a Bimota a Ducati? Not to mention, there aren't all that many parts in common between an XL and a Buell. Sure there are a lot that are close, but let's be honest here - a Sportster engine is more Buell than vise versa.

Harley, among other things, is an engine supplier. Buell has merely used them as such.
