Default Rear axle - what am I doing wrong?

Had the wheels off for tires and some other stuff, having trouble getting the rear back on.

All the spacers are in (big one right side, small one left), and I did not loosen the adjusters when I pulled the axle (came out easily enough, light taps). Now though I have a little gap between the adjuster and the swingarm on the left side. I can't seem to close it up.

Tried twisting the wheel, tapping the right side of the wheel with a mallet, changing the angle using a jack under the tire, can't get the left adjuster against the swingarm.

The gap is about 1/16". Thoughts?

Belt too tight? Out of place?
Brake mounting arm stuck?

With the axle nut loose, the axle should move forward/backward in the swing arm slot...

Alignment of the axle is done by measuring back from the swingarm pivot point on each side - See the manual - Use a steel rod with a bend at the swingarm - center the rod in the bolt, then measure & mark the center of the axle bolt - Put the rod on the other side and compare to your mark...

first of all, there will be some space. when the axle is tightened, swing arm will close in.
mr. lax makes a good point on the belt, if it is pulling on the pulley, the axle will be off.
what i do is loosen the axle and push forward after loosening axle adjusters.
with axle free, snug up the axle to remove any slack, it will have drag when you try to move it.
i use a vernier to measure the adjuster stems to the axle stop plate (the piece the adjuster nut turns on and fits the square tube) i adjust out each side in steps with equal measurements till i get the belt tension i want. always turn belt in direction of travel and align the belt in the pulley so it touches neither side.
if you miss the mark, loose and repeat, do not try to reclaim position by wacking one side. then torque axle to spec.

I use a thick close hanger with a zip tie on it to measure mine. I cut the hanger wear it bends on one side leaving about a quarter inch of the bent psrt to put into the hole in the side of the swingarm then leave the other end of the hanger straight and use the zip tie that is tied around the hanger as a marker to measure the distance of each side.

+1, I do this also, but i put a piece of masking tape underneath where the zip-tie goes so it doesn't slide around. Works great!

Did the adjuster snug up at the proper alignment - or was the previous alignment off that much??
