Offer him a bit less and see what he says.
To note, if you are looking there is a 1972 on chopcult in MD for $1500.
It is not a basket case...says it was running...numbers match..etc.
I have no link to the deal just passing on some information.

The real problem is guys atomizing them--taking them down to the smallest bit--without the money, time, and expertise to put them back together. Once 70s Sportsters get taken down that far, it costs too much in time and money to put them back together and of course parts get lost. If they'd just leave them in one piece until they had the resources to fix them, they'd be far better off.
