granted 409 rusts but it all depends upon application. never take care of it, road salt and such will make it rust. a lot of mfg's will use it on cheaper lines and save the 304 for more expensive vehicles, sorta like a caddy to a pinto.
there is one thing that 304 does do and that is discolor under high heat. like i said, goes to the core, can you improve the look, well to an extent. the suggestion of ceramic coating is a very good option.

I'm not aware of any use of 409 on aftermarket motorcycle exhaust systems. 304 or titanium does stay prettier. Many OE automotive exhausts are 409. The replacement system for my daily driver is 409, Flowmater mufflers are 409. 321 stainless is the "better" stainless for exhaust systems and is the norm on aircraft. The downside to 304 is it work hardens, can be prone to cracking and can't be annealed by conventional methods. The "discoloration" is actually oxidation of the surface, it varies depending on the metal temperature. Scotchbrite pads will remove it but it will come back when the system is run again.

I use Lysol toilet bowl cleaner (applied with a cotton ball). Super easy and no elbow grease needed; just rub on and rinse and watch your pipe be restored to near new condition. I’ve used this method for years with my stainless steel motorcycle pipes.
