Question 1200 5th Gear in 883 conversion

I've seen several sprocket mods, up the teeth from 27 to 29 and some other mods for high highway RPM riding to reduce vibrations when doing 80 and higher.

I don't want to change anything when I like what i got (2000 883 to 1200 conversion ride it like you stole it) to get up to speed in 1st thru 4th. But when in 5th and going fast on the highway the vibrations has broke 2 tach mounts and does get uncomfortable after riding at that pace for over 130 miles.

I was lucky to have a buddy measure the dimensions from the tach mount that harley doesn't make any more... I think because of them breaking. Like taking a beer can and bending it back and forth until it becomes 2 pieces. And he made me 2 new ones from a laser cutting machine with stainless steel at his work. I'm grateful for his skillz.

I tried searching but only seen sprocket results.

But would just replacing the stock 883 5th gear to a different ratio, or replacing my stock 2000 883 5th gear with a stock 1200 5th gear help reduce the RPM and vibrations at highway speeds? Currently at 4000 RPM I'm usually doing 75ish in 5th gear.

Any one ever tried it? Or know if it would make a difference in comfort by only changing 5th gear to a different ratio?

Or maybe a link to an existing thread for reference?

Like what I got, but would like to know if just changing 5th gear would make much difference or any at all, with all sprockets staying the same.

Thanks for any feedback.

Lightbulb TransGear?

After more searching I found this TransGear. Anyone ever heard or tried this without changing pulleys? Called the Sportgear.

fifth gear is direct.. 1:1
trans input speed = output speed.
Its not actually a gear that you can change.

The only way to change final drive ratio in fifth is to change sprocket, or pulley.
You can also make an overall change with engine and trans sprockets.

What sport gear does is change the ratio in gears 1-4, and fifth is still direct. (And there will be a larger gap from fourth to fifth)

If your goal is to have the same acceleration as now in 1-4, then lower the RPM in fifth, sport gear would basically accomplish that with a sprocket/pulley change.

With the same sprockets/ pulley you have now. Sport gear would give you lower gearing 1-4, and the same RPM in fifth.

the sportgear is a real hoot. all said and done about 1000 dollars if you do the work yourself and it is easy to do.
i went with the int'l gearing but if you keep the stock pulley, it will just accelerate harder. by using the 55t pulley, you will get a 500 rpm drop in fifth. at 4k, i am running 90 mph. even with the 55t, you will not know the diff as it actually still out performs the stock gearing.

Thanks for the responses everyone. Same pulleys and Baker 6 speed I will look into. Seems less work, but maybe more up front cost.

I understand better the SportGear, and how needs to have different pulleys. But more work to do in the garage.
