The steel ones are better in my opinion.
They can wear as well. Look for a "groove" in them.
The wear is really caused by vibration. A lot of IH's do vibrate. (The ones that run).

I suspect the ethanol now almost universally used does affect the viton as well.

I use the enricher circuit to start the bike but as soon as I turn it off, the bike will die.

I spoke with the tech support at S&S and they mentioned that the throttle bushing should be a simple swap - as in no machining necessary, but only if the bushing seat isn't worn into a slot or an oval. I am going to inspect the quality of that bushing one more time before I decide to mess with it.

I'll see what happens without the inline fuel filter, but when the bike dies, there is fuel in the carb - it spills out when I remove the fuel line and tilt the carb.

It definitely has the viton tipped needle. I have read that that style seals better than the steel tipped. In any case, the rebuild kit comes with both a needle (viton tipped) and a seat so I will replace both to ensure they seal.

Intermediate jet is blocked.
It sounds very muc like the bike is only running on the enrichner circuit. pull the inter and make sure it is not blocked.

The jets are clear and I double check every time I take the carb off.

I got the rebuild kit yesterday and it appears that there is no throttle shaft bushing on it as it comes. The replacement bushing is only needed if the shaft thru holes are worn which mine were not. The new shaft went in with a little bit of effort so I know it's a tight fit. There's no wiggle with the new shaft.

I scored the inside of the throttle body when I took the old butterfly valve out - I hope that doesn't mess with the flow too much. Getting the new butterfly valve in was a pain in the ass but it's in there good now.

The only thing I couldn't get out was the float valve seat so I took it to work to use the vise and screw that thing out. The old float needle was a little worn but I've seen much worse. I figure I have the parts so I might as well replace them.

I'm gonna get it back on the bike today and see what happens.

hat's telling us that the cab is not supplying fuel through the intermediate circuit for some reason. It may well be the drilled passage in the carb body is blocked.

The enridhner circuit is a separate circuit and when you open it, it is obviously supplying fuel. This should be in conjunction with the intermediate circuit at 2000 rpm. The fact that it dies when you turn off the supply through the enrihner te;;s me that your inter is not working for whatever reason.

Mostly air leaks will affect idle quality and cause a lean condition in the lower rev range. Carb will "spit back" under load.
If you had an air leak so bad the engine wouldn't run I would expect to see the carb hanging off by just one bolt. (Well, you know, obvious)

Don't clean out the passages with wire etc. Use compressed air only.

These are very simple carbs with fixed jets and only 3 circuits (ignoring the enrichner).

But I do know that they will not start and run if the inter is blocked. You can't rev them high enough to bring in the main. And if you DO manage to get them to ifle they will die just as soon as you touch the throttle.

Are you possibly turning it fully off too soon? Perhaps it should be off in stages, during which you keep it running with the throttle. This is a common way of using a choke/enrichener. I am usually at about my 3rd stop [sign or light] running when I have it all the way off.

Installed the carb kit, got a carb bracket, put the carb on and it only turns on up to 2000rpm with the enricher circuit on and then dies. After that, I doesn't want to start a second time.

So it doesn't even idle anymore.

All the passages are clear - I sprayed with air and carb cleaner at work today when it was all disassembled. I dunno what else to try other than a new carb

I know it's not a flow issue with the petcock because when it's not hooked up to the carb, gas flows thru the tube if it's on reserve.
