Default Do Loud Pipes in fact save lives?

So, do they? Will motorists hear you before they see you, and thereby not move into the way? Or will it just be some random loud noise that startles them and makes them even more dangerous to you?

Probably not. There's an article in the new Hog Tails that makes the argument that if loud pipes did, in fact, save lives, then there'd be a disproportionate amount of quiet bike (like Goldwing) riders dead. I'm sure there's no one tabulating crash statistics by exhaust decibel level (especially after a crash that totals a bike).

Where are the Mythbusters when you need them???

Yep, this is how I think it breaks down. Air heads are air heads and loud pipes can do nothing about that. Besides with half the people out there driving around with thumpin' stereos, cell phones and ipods in their ears they won't hear even loud pipes; thier heads are somewhere completetly different. IMHO loud pipes are simply a choice that some people make, I'm just glad I live in a place where nobody seems to give a crap about it.

yes and no - some say they startle drivers but i know mine saved my skin from the oblivious motorist on the mobile phone wandering in to my lane - slip clutch wind the throttle one dropped phone later and hes looking at me like hes wants to fight but at least he saw and acknowledged me

Air horns accomplish the same task, and are less strees on your engine.

loud pipes do nothing with the a-hole blowing thru a light and smashing into you, or the dipshit that see you coming and cuts you off anyway because you are only a bike, or the idiots that are on their god damned cell phones and think they owm the roads. They are so distracted they are oblivious to what's around them anyway.
But at this point I don't care if they do or do no. I know I like them loud.

What about the other side of the coin, "saving the lives of pedestrians" , the idiot with the MP3 player walking in front of you or the Kids playing on the sidewalks running out ?

I can't believe someone brought this up, again!!!!

I think they can in certain situations, but I don't rely on it.... I've used them to ward off errant cell phone talking airheads, little old ladies who can't see over the door sill, etc., before, but it's not gonna help if someone runs a stoplight...

I can't wait for Kev to see this....

This seems to have been a hotly debated issue
