Default Help (timing the pinion gear to the crankshaft)

How do you time the pinion gear to the crankshaft? Shaft is splined from crankshaft. The pinion gear has a timing mark but is not pre-set to fit in any one place on the crankshaft. Does the crankshaft need to be at tdc or does the front or back pistion need to be at tdc.

The pinion shaft has a mark as well, line it up to the one on the gear. The mark is at the very end of one of the splines on the shaft.

If you have a Buell with a splined pinion shaft, it must be aftermarket?

No, the splined pinion shafts ended with the '87 model year. The only Buells ever made with the splined pinion shaft were RR1000's, with their XR1000 engines.

Good pic Iron Mick, that puts it to rest!

I once had a customer call me, telling me the valves were hitting the pistons and he had carved the bejeezus out of the valve pockets trying to get clearance and they still hit. This on a motor that had an S&S crank, which of course uses a splined pinion. He was convinced the cams were made wrong.

Took me awhile to realize he hadn't paid attention to that mark when you put his pinion gear on.

This was a noted engine tuner for a drag race buddy of mine ... but his experience was limited to 5-speed Evo's and I don't think he had ever encountered a splined pinion shaft before.

Anyway, he ruined the pistons

Also, do you think you ground on that pinion bearing race enough?

I remember having to do that to make cams fit. Scared the hades out of me.
