Default 67349-08 Speedometer in 2011 Nightster

Hello
Its my first thread here.
I have bought 2011 Nightster two weeks ago and I have issues with low fuel level light, but different than others. With full tank "res" is lighting for some time but with droping fuel level its comes off and range is comming up (not down). Everything it looks like the signal is inverted.
I knew the original speedo was replaced and yesterday I have checked th PN of mounted one. The number is 67349-08 so is from electra. It is possible reason of that issue? I dont have anyone with Sportster speedo whom I could take it and check.
Thanks in advance

Default Speedo-fuel

Hi,
I have a 2008 with the original speedo. When i fill up the fuel light will come on but will go off after some time.
I believe this is the fuel level sensor in the fuel tank and not the gauge.
It only concerned me at first however i just use the mileage to judge when to add fuel. I have never seen it come on at low fuel level but i would possibly have placed fuel in tank before this would occur.

Thanks for Your reply.
After some time do You mean some miles Or it can just stand in garage? Can you tell me about Your range when light come out? It is descending?
Im also considering sensor but it is easier to start from speedo than open the tank Especialy when I cant find any info about 67349-08 compatibility (or not) with sportster.
And Im also use milage to know when to tank but with that dang light my speedo always strarts with "lo" and this is a little annoying.

Default Speedo-fuel

The fuel light will come on soon after filling the tank. I have to place some miles on the bike and it will disappear. So the fuel level must have to come down somewhat. If i park the vehicle and have not used much fuel the light will come back on when restarting but sometimes not straight away, maybe after some motion of riding. So I would be positive it is the sensor set up in tank.
I am not sure how many miles for the light to go off after it comes on. A rough guess would be perhaps 5 miles? Maybe less. I need to use the fuel for it to come down and light to go off.

You can look in manual and see more clearly the fuel pump set-up inside fuel tank. Maybe look on google. I had watc heda guy on Youtube taking an fuel pump out of tank of a efi xl sportster. The fuel sensor is part of the fuel pump set up. All the best.

Default fuel speedo

Just too add.
My speedo will not have the light on unless i have filled up.
So it will never be on when i start the bike after being in the garage. Just the fuel level full issue. My speedo does not give levels just the fuel light on for the reasons we have discussed. If your speedo shows various levels i am not familiar with this sort. However i can only imagine it should be close similarity. I say this as i do not want to completely place you on the wrong path.

Here's the Sportsterpedia section on the Low Fuel Sensor:
http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/t...ow_fuel_sensor

Since the Speedo you have is intended for the 'Electra', the BT models use a variable resistance to indicate fuel level and a resistance above 240 ohms indicates LOW FUEL or EMPTY... which will always be the case on the Sportster fuel level signal...

So - Your assumption is right - the BT model speedo WILL NOT ACCURATELY reflect the fuel level in your SPORTSTER tank... You can expect erratic indications due to the incompatible sensor systems...

IXL2Relax Has the answer as far as the incompatibility, but the reversed indication your gauge is giving you makes me wonder............ Since you have the wrong and incompatible gauge but everything else is working correctly, but the fuel level is reading backwards, and you have nothing to loose, I would try to reverse the wires from the sending unit just to see what happens. It is a longshot, but it would be really cool if it works.

IXL2Relax do You have any additonal info about this resistances where I could read something more?

One more hint: With the wrong speedo I could get issuess with selfcanceling turns because im not sure if they works correctly?

Green hornet after last "few" miles of riding Im not sure if it really inverted so it may be dead end.
Last time I have tanked the full tank and the light has go off but after about 35 miles it turned on again. Now after ~100miles its off and range is growing up.

Theres any reason to remove fuel pump to see how sensor looks or it gonna be a waste of time at this moment and should I get the sensor first? (Im just courious how it works and if there is a way to check if it works properly)

Regards

Did you read the info at my previous link?

It's likely that the sensor in your fuel tank is working fine - and that the speedo is also working fine...

The problem is that the sensor in the Sportster fuel tank has only two conditions - it present either 10K ohms resistance (when not low in fuel) or 2K ohms resistance (when fuel is low)... both the 10K & the 2K resistance is higher than the speedo is expecting...

The BT fuel sensor (intended for this speedo) varies it's resistance from below 50 ohms (30-50) when FULL, to 250 ohms (240-260) when EMPTY... The BT speedometer expects this variation of resistance (from 50-250 ohms) - but it sees 10K resistance from the Sportster sensor when the Sportster tank is FULL - which looks to the BT speedometer as though the tank is more-than empty...

The Sportster sensor and the BT speedometer are incompatible in terms of what the sensor is sending and what the speedo expects... and, it's unlikely that you can install a BT sensor in the Sportster fuel tank...

The Low Fuel Light on the BT speedo is also used to indicate a problem in the fuel sensor - so it's erratic lighting will also be related to the mismatch between speedo and sensor...

Like anything else, it is possible to design some type of electronic circuitry to overcome the incompatibility - but I haven't heard of any such adapter currently existing...

IXL2Relax thanks for explanation. Now everything is clear.
Yes I saw Your post before edit.
You confirmed what I tought and I need to start from speedo.
I have one more question. Do I need one of those speedos (67037-08, 67041-08, 67290-08 ) or could I use any with 12 pin socket dedicated for sportster?
Regards
