"NOTE:" what i owned
not all engines have marks, they used stops. you do know what a stop is???
some older engines had marks but without documentation, hard to determine what is what.
some engines have no marks but a degree vernier.
i am pretty sure even those have documentation from the mfg, which BTW, do you have???
i believe you are talking about mag setup and timing on the vincent. magneto are a diff animal because they are mechanically lock with timing only possible by point gap since some do not use base plates. on that note, some have put marks which can be seen through the primary side. you are correct that the flywheel does not have marks but then again, base set with stops.
even the hd engine can have marks put on the primary side so no oil coming out the timing hole, time through inspection port.

Hey Bustert, I had a 1958 Wildcat Scrambler but never actually owned a Zundap.
But then I did have a 500 OK Supreme early on.

Timing marks are handy if they are on there, But they do need to be checked before you rely on them. A piston position indicator tool is a cheap and essential part of your toolkit.

E Very engine is just slightly different. The FSM numbers are accurate for most engines.
But the minute you modify anything it all changes.
Why anyone would think the can change cams, carbs, compression ratio's, port velocities, exhausts etc etc etc and expect the engine still wants the same 45 degrees ( I only do 900's now) is beyond me.

But physics don't lie while timing marks sometimes do.

i did have over 40 personal machines
i guess the figure of speech A>Z (aprilla>zundap) goes over peoples heads.
of course i did not own every brand.how i got so many machines??
well i started hopping up lawn engines at 12 yrs old and also started fooling around with mc's.
my first was a cushman husky which i paid 57 dollars for, tough machine as i had as many miles rubber side up as down. my first hd was a hummer. as time went on, i started buying wrecks and burned up engine machines which i rebuilt and kept awhile and then sold and started the process all over.
as far as the zundap, i did have one which i got from a guy, had no compression. turned out to be a bear since parts were few and far between. back then, boneyards were what one had to go for and before the net, some were hooked up by radio system. i bought a ton of parts from one in houston on telephone pole road i believe.

I had a motorcycle shop at one time. So people were always asking me if I wanted to buy their bikes. Everyone knew I was interested in the odd ball things.
I never owned a Bhomerland either. That's one I did miss out on.

as far a using the light and not getting soaked in oil, run bike to temp, shut down, let oil drain back down, restart, raise enricher lever on carb ( on S and S) to raise rpms, shoot your light, thats how I do it AND no oil bath
