yes... i think so...
it's all they are concerned for...

as for distances...
IMO differences in some EU countries... and especially in Italy... are more about what you have to do to make a certain distance... i mean... little deserted areas...
if i do 500 kms in Italy i pass through hundreds of big towns and small villages... we have not the vastness of the US plains... or even the German or French ones... (you can consider for an example the Po valley as a one monolithic big city)...
