I had two S's before I got this one. Took me a while to find the 2000 I have now and I'm keeping this one.
The PO put some forward controls, saddlebags, and windshield and used it for commuting.
It still rocks the twisties.
So I'll be looking for some mids...

"Does the average 1200S owner actually know what he/she's got?"

I bought my original XL1200S in October of 1997. It was the first 1998 XL1200S sold here in Austin - and the dealership certainly did not know what it was. I bought the bike because it hit all the buttons for me, a sporty Harley! I was attracted to it because of the upgraded suspension and motor. The Harley dealer proved that they were clueless when they rejetted it as if it were a regular 1200 and it would no longer rev over 4500 rpm... "They all do that" was their stock response, of course. After 3 attempts and ensuing arguments with the service manager I gave up and I jetted it properly myself and that issue was resolved.

I had to sell that one several years later. The one I recently acquired came from the first owner - he was well aware of the "S" model and it's uniqueness.

What baffles me is when people put forward controls on them. Or ape hangers. Or lower shocks. Why get the "S" version and cripple it? I guess those folks either don't know or don't care that the bike is the sport version. I guess it's their bike but it still make me cringe.

I found a nice low mileage S model with forwards for a buddy after I already had mine. He let me ride it and it was the worst riding position with them, I hated it. Mine has rearsets which I highly prefer to mids as well. I had a Honda Shadow with forward controls which was very comfortable considering the seat height and leg reach to the pegs. The 1200s no way

I’ve only put 100 miles on my 99 S before it started to snow last fall. It had bull bars and forwards. I found the stock bars and I’m not sure about the forwards. I’m ‘vertically challenged and the forwards put my legs completely straight. I’ll probably keep an eye out for mids.

I bought mine new knowing exactly what it was. That was the whole reason for buying it.
Most dealers have no idea of the Sport. Hence I do almost all of my on service.
I did add RK air shocks as the stock ones started to bottom out on big bumps and with the wife on the back with small bumps. Also I added buckhorn bars due to shoulder pain on longer rides. Way more comfortable. As I've gotten older my riding style has become more conservative. But still have the mids and added the cheap harley highway pegs. With the buckhorn bars the reach to the pegs isn't so bad. Stil runs great after 65000 miles. Also I pieced together SE ignition kit as well. It still gives the By a a run for their money, Even the older CVOs.
