Default Question on a transfer valve

I was reading a post by Mopartnut73 and you guys were talking about a transfer valve that sucks the oil out of the primary. I have a 1967 XLH and 1960 XLCH and a 1953 K model. In the two ironheads, I am running a primary oil that I buy at my local motorcycle parts place that is more like a transmission fluid. Is this being mixed back and forth with my oil? I always thought those two systems were separated.

yes the two systems are connected and can/will mix engine and primary oils. the primary wasn't separated until 1977.

Thank you very much for the quick reply. So this means I need to change oil in both of these bikes and put strait motor oil in the primary.

right. strait motor oil, or even 20w50 if it gets cold where you are.

> Is this being mixed back and forth with my oil?

If someone blocked off the valve, and the sprocket seal is working as intended (sealing), then they are separate compartments and you can run whatever you want in each.

If the transfer valve is in place, then engine and primary oil mixes and the same oil should be in each.

good point GA.you shouldn't assume either way.only way to be sure is to verify if the transfer valve is functional or plugged.

all correct info im reading here. if/when you open the primaries post a pic of each we can tell you if they appear stock/functional.

what wasnt addressed. ** i dont know a lot about this, im only posting what i know**
the k model- it also transfers. the details of how i dont know well enough to post about but the same primary and engine oil should also be kept the same.

I have read all the posts on the thread up until this a.m. I was not having any trouble with the bikes but last time I changed oil in them I put the more modern transmission fluid in the primaries. So today I went out and changed oil in both bikes and cleaned out both primaries. They both have the valves in them they both look clean so I put them back together with strait oil. Thanks again everyone for all the info it was a very interesting read. I can see both sides, if it is a PCV valve or a transfer valve, they both make since.
