With every engine their will be some variation in the "perfect" timing.
But normal position for 900 engines is 45 BTDC.

It will be too far advanced at lower rpm's but fine over 2000.

Increases in compression ratio or anything at all that contributes to a faster burn would dictate less advance.

Sorry to hear that it sounds like one of the MSF units is damaged.

Did you swap the location, front to back, of the two cable systems to confirm that's the case ?

Give Dave a ring at Morris. He will work with you.

again 45° ignition timing and original magneto cables...one kick starting (cold stone ) !!!
am I awake or dreaming ? first time, I think, in 52 years !!!
In the while I tested again MSF cables : double cables.. misfiring, one only cable and ground starts normally, but front cylinder cold after trying all the combinations ... I chose to go back to basics
May be after 10 years MSF cables got tired !
Thanks to all and best wishes
mario

Well, that's definitive at least.

And sorry, I was thinking the MSF units were a new addition for you.

The MSF units are nothing more than a diode big enough to handle the power going through tem.

a diode can fail in one of two ways, going open or going short.

If they (or one of them) has gone open checking with an ohmmeter should show infinite resistance.

Might be only one unit has failed.

I don't understand this :

It's possible to have an Ironhead only running on one cylinder but it's pretty obvious a problem. As I understand it your saying the front cylinder isn't firing ?

If so, swapping the cables would show if the problem was that cable.

If it has gone short, again checking with an ohmmeter should tell you that.

Thanks Ferrous Head,
it is very kind of you to follow my story and give good advice...
At the moment I am "happy" of what I got ...ONE kick start and "obedient" to tune up...
next goal is to perform a good break-in ( new TRW forged pistons )
When, ten years ago, I installed a pair of MSF cables (dual spark plugs), was mainly to improve starting, rather than other envisaged advantages
Of course I am sorry to give up on MSF cables, but I'll contact Morris Magneto and if one day I have some money left over...I'll replace them
Thanks again to all Mario

No worries. I like to see as many people struggling with the these old things as I can.

Why should I be the only one ?

This one ?
