Default .551 Cams in an EFI 1200

Anybody running Harley .551 cams (XB9 cams) in an EFI 1200?

Just looking at options for my '17 1200C and was hoping for feedback from those who've done this.

Well, I took the plunge. I spent two afternoons dropping in a set of SE .551 cams. Only other change was adding a bronze oil pump gear.

Rest of my set-up is pretty typical stage 1. Power Vision, Hammer Impact Offset Air Cleaner, Rush slip-ons with 1 1/2" baffles, I also have 1 3/4" baffles that may go back in.

I have to do some tuning, I just added fuel (not enough, PV recorded some detonation) to the map I was running but 1st impression is the cams added what I wanted. It runs nicer. It casually goes faster. It feels good, much more free revving. I lost a little under 2,500 rpm power, not enough to be an issue, but enough you can tell. It pulls smoothly/tractably, just a little less.

The valve train (lifter) noise I was expecting isn't there. If there's more than stock it's minimal.

I got 185+ lbs cranking pressure, both cylinders, cold engine, before I put the fuel tank back on. 1st time the motor was spun on the starter after the cam install. I still have stock head gaskets, I did a minimum necessary cams install except for the bronze oil pump gear.

So, I made another, even richer map to go auto tuning (basic) with tomorrow. Should be interesting. The motor definitely runs nicer even with "less than optimal" tuning.

Did you have to do any clearancing to install the .551 lift cams? I ordered the Hammer Impact .560 cams for my 2019. Was just wondering if I need to prepare for this during installation?

They dropped in. Lifters dropped far enough for the smaller base circle(s). Lobes cleared the case. Cam lengths (surface to surface) were same as the OE (W) cams so no end play issues.

I don't know if that's typical or not (1st Sportster I've done) but they were just bolt-ins.

Thanks 60Gunner. I just ordered my 1275 kit from Hammer. Waiting on a new set of 883 heads from the dealership, which I'll be shipping to Hammer for porting. I am thinking of going with either the Smash or Crush headwork to hit the 100+ horsepower mark.

I've read the 551 make noise.

When you have it dialed in do a Dyno baseline pull, about $50.

It makes nice wall art.

Curious why the 551s rather than the Hammer 570s where you wouldn't have lost anything down low. Not knocking your choice, just curious. I've heard of guys pulling them and replacing them because of the noise being so bad.
The 560s pull even stronger up top than the 570s without losing much more than you have down low.
Good move on the bronze drive gear! Doesn't make sense to do cams without doing it.
