OK. I know the bike now.

This is the "One Off' Factory built bike made for the Barcelona 24 Hour race in 1980.

Nah, just kidding. Do the chocks mount on the seat casting ?

The Square swing arm bolts onto an earlier frame.

It sounds like you may have a situation where a non-VIN frame was stamped with a later VIN.

And that it a "Bad Thing"[tm] due to the possibility of another frame existing with the same number.

I am definately going to look into it some more. The vin pad and stamping doesnt look like something someone did. I kinda think I have a couple different frames scabbed together. I will look for more clue the next time I get to work on it. Appreciate the help.

I would suspect the front portion with the VIN matching the engine number is all kosher.

Possibly someone grafted on the seat casting and down tubes from an 68 as they didn't like the rear set shock look.

Also allows you to install a sprung solo seat. And the Horseshoe oil tank.

I would have just started with an earlier bike. but that's just me.

Shaky Dave, the bitter old man is 55. Probably should have been bitter middle aged man. But, that doesnt really roll off the tongue. Lol! I need to do some measuring. It does have a horseshoe tank. But, it has a nice "clearance dent" in the front to clear the rocker box. Maybe it ended up a little shorter after the surgery. I also need to look at the differences in the top engine mount between the different years. This would help validate that the front part is a 79, so I wouldnt have to worry about the possibility of there being another frame out there with the same vin. I really doubt that is real. There is a very unique font that they use on the vin. It looks EXACTLY the same as the vin on the engine. The real question is, do the other owners of 79s now look down their noses at me because of my bastard child. Lol.

Don't worry - we do far more radical surgery in attempts to improve on what HD built.

And we don't look down our noses at anybody who wants ride anything they want.

A 79 doesn't have a top motor mount It has a tab off the bottom of the neck in the front and a through hole in the frame above and between the rear rockers.
