You can do it!! I did many years ago. Its no pick-nic ..I went to the stupid meetings and they are good for some but not for me. They did help break the habit just doing anything out of the norm was refreshing to say the least.
Get a hobby..Like a motorcycle!!

I don't see myself in meetings, not my style. With pills, coke and smoke, it was simply a matter of deciding it was time. I don't know how it works exactly, I just woke up one day and said enough, done with that.
Anyway, thanks to all of ya for the kind words of support!
Day three.

I can't image exposing myself as honestly as you did. That had to have been tough. Thank you for sharing what you're going through and future plans. I'm pulling for you and your decision to be sober today. Your wife is an awesome person and she'll be rewarded for supporting you.

It's a great beginning. But remember, it's just the beginning. You can do it!

Drinking is a choice, some say treat it like a disease.
I say, loo around you, see what nasty stuff there is in the world.
You only have to stop drinking, darn petty compared to ebola and other life threatening things
The downside of not drinking is you dont get a new bike every year or two.
Ive been stuck with mine for 7 years now

Good point, I was thinking about stopping too. I simply enjoy life more when I'm not drunk or hungover.

This morning, I realized that this is an important decision for me for another reason - my boy is about to be 17, he would never admit it but he tries so very hard to be like me, and it is important to me to set a good example for him, ESPECIALLY in this regard. His biological parents both had histories of substance abuse.
I feel confident that I will be able to do this
But I will break the habit. I have to, before it destroys my life and my family around me.
So....Day two.

There are many of us on this site that were right where you are now, at one time or another.
My advice is to get real selfish and do this for YOURSELF.
You may not get the support from those people that you thought would support you. And you will get support from people you never thought you would. There are many of us that will cheer you on and can relate to your struggle, if only from our keyboards.
In one month I will bump a thread that I started 7 years ago. It hints at my story. This is the beginning of your story. Keep us posted. We're cheering for you. Michael T

Ya! It really is that simple.
The possibilities are endless when I'm sober: Work on Harley, run/bike/swim, record music, go surfing, go for a long ride, anything!
Possibilities when I'm drinking: Drink more, pass out, get fatter, feel like sh!t the next day.
When I say it like that, I don't know why I ever drink...
