With respect to the pushrods ...
  • All XL883 heads are 3.690" tall from the factory.
  • All 1986-2003 XL1100 & XL1200 heads are 3.690" tall from the factory.
  • All Buell XB heads are 3.670" tall from the factory.
  • All 2004+ XL1200 heads are 3.670" from the factory (these are XB heads with a little different machining and cosmetics).

When the XB heads came out in 2003, they were the first to get 3.670" tall heads, and they got pushrods with a different part number that measure .020" shorter than the other pushrods of the day.

Then when the rubber mount XL's came out in 2004, they got the XL version of the XB heads on the 1200 models and the new part number shorter pushrods to match.

What's odd is the 2004+ XL883's also got the new part number shorter pushrods, despite the fact that their heads remained 3.690" tall.

Anyway, the bottom line is that if you put XB heads onto a 1995 XL883, and make no other changes, you're going to get .020" more preload on the lifter. That's probably not enough to cause any issues. Might even help.

However, if you mill the heads any, and/or use thin gaskets, and/or do a valve job, that preload increases, and you could get yourself into trouble.

Excellent info... I'm thinking I saw this on yer site... But...was inundating myself in information.. Apologies for recovering old ground!!
I will be touching up the valve job... but...will measure stem protrusion before and after..
Hammer has different length Pushrods, great, as I prefer those to Adjustables..

Next Up.... Cams... Thinking S&S 500's

The combustion chambers of 1200 heads are larger than the 883. This is why 883 to 1200 pistons using 883 heads are not flat, but dished. This is why you cannot use regular 1200 pistons with 883 heads. The compression ratio becomes too high for street use.
You might want to evaluate this situation, difference in chamber size and resulting loss of compression with the 1200 heads, before changing heads with std 883 bore and pistons.
