One factor that initial lead + mechanical advance cannot fully resolve, but (some) electronic ignitions do:
The best initial timing for starting, idle and WOT are different. Something like (depending, obviously, on the engine and state of tune):
Start 5°
Idle 15°
WOT 35°
High vacuum cruise 50°
