In the US the sportster is an entry model. In Europe and Japan not so.
For example XR1200 was made for the european market: Better design the bike being a keeper. In the US, not so.

Cush drive lowers the disengaged clutch speed and dampens the gear hammering. Does my 124 cui XL use the ISR cush drive rear hub? Of course it does.

Makes sense if the cush drive was for all of the European market to build a 'keeper' but it was only for Japan models. I realize you can get parts from Japan and modify your own and now probably aftermarket ones, and then there is always Ebay.

I agree. It's also the clutch basket thing.
I copy my earlier post in this thread.
"In the earlier days the sportsters had compensators on the crank sprocket just like the big twins still have.
The buell xb engines had damper springs in the clutch shell.
I beleive also the xr1200 has such a basket.
I beleive its a production cost thing. XB:s and XR1200:s was more expensive than ordinary sportsters of the same years."

Now that I'd buy. The XR1200 came out in 2009 the year after the 2008 financial bust exploded. No money in the US, MoCo taps Japan for mortgage money.

Being an engineer, I have no problem with loss of cush drive on a belt drive bike, but running chain you should run cush drive. My opinion.

Makes sense. Chain has more mechanical backlash than a soft belt.
I have noticed the springs and such on the older sprockets while researching but the compensator bowl design is totally different. It looks like it should have more dampening than the older styles but I've never had one so I don't know.

A cush drive is a great thing with a chain drive. Steel chains transmit virtually all the shock to the transmission. Especially when adjusted on the loose side. The cush drive absorbs the energy from the snatching action when the front sprocket suddenly takes the slack out of an unyielding chain. It takes a lot of shock out of the system during fast shifts and quick acceleration. Not much help with a belt drive as the belt, although very strong pretty much does the job or enough of the stress cushioning to not need the added junk of a cush drive mechanism. Mainly because a belt drive that is adjusted to specs has very little perceived slack. It also yields slightly where the steel chain has virtually zero elasticity.

Default Harley's cush drive components available for belt drive Sportsters

I have installed these parts on two Sportsters and the difference is truly amazing. The drive belts are about as stretchy as chains, and transmit all the shock of each power stroke without absorbing any significant amount. The cush drive parts: (Belt Sprocket 40518-08, Bowl 40560-05, isolator rubbers 40561-05, spacer 40562-05) Transform the Sporty into a very smooth motorcycle, something the Sportster has rarely been accused of. Please note that the late model baggers now have this same system (different part nos.) and it makes a significant difference even though they already have a compensating sprocket that the Sporty does not have. Please don't reply with opinions before ACTUALLY TRYING these parts out on a rubber-mount sporty! (part numbers from 2008 Sportster paper Parts book, rear wheel pages 66-67)

My guess as to why only Japan gets them is that they love the look of an HD, but not the rough ride. All the Japanese bikes run smooth as sewing machines, and they aint buying bikes that have driveline lash.

I know this is an old thread.

Just a FYI for folks in case you did not know. In Germany Harley says the 40518-08 SPROCKET ASSEMBLY, final drive, w/ bearing – 68T parts is no longer available.

I was planning to upgrade to a cush drive since I thought it would make touring with two riders more comfortable.

If anyone knows of any options please share.
