Good job on that shaft and bracket. I would recommend putting studs in the carb if you are going to be taking it off a lot working on other things or just be kind to it with the bolts. If you go to a swapmeet and start checking out bendix carbs you will find that the real weakness they have is air cleaner bolt holes cracked from over tightening and the mount holes wallowed out from over use and over torquing. And watch tightening the main jet you will find a lot of cracked bowls. With care they are a good carb.

I didn't see this mentioned. Bendix (a) has fewer transfer holes (2 ?) in roof of venture, compared to Bendix (b) bodied carburetor (4 ?)

This reminded me of an old post with pics that show some of the external differences between the 38 and 36. The most obvious one is the beefier bosses for the air cleaner screws.

Btw the 36 shown has the same throttle linkage that came on yours.

And plus 1 on the warning about cracking the bowl. The 36 I have came like that.

Thanks for the link to the old thread. It was an interesting read, I did notice that my 36 had 3 idle passages and the service manual description of the 38 referenced 4. Fortunately mine is in excellent condition, with all of the air filter bosses like new. I would think having a support bracket for the filter backplate would be especially important for the 36.
As far as how it runs, it’s very responsive with no hesitation or stumble. I can’t speak to the ultimate wide open CFM performance because I’ve got nothing to compare it to, but I’m quite happy with it now. I really like the adjustable main jet, it’s great to be able to tweak it on the fly, and I’m sure that was a big factor in getting it dialed in quickly.

Does anyone know what model(s) used the 36? The part number doesn’t come up in the numerical index in the ‘54-‘78 parts manual, and the dash number is 71, so I would think that it’s a safe bet it wasn’t a Sportster. However, I’m new to Sportsters (and Harley’s in general) so I have a lot to learn.
