Default Curious question (Wheelies)

I watched a video the other day, it had a Sporty out doing seemingly effortless power wheelies. I was wondering, how much horsepower is required to do this?

could be a stock bike with the gearing changed. is what typical stunt bikes will do. super large rear sprocket will stand even a modestly powered bike right up.

Here ya go...stock 883 gearing...see what was done to the engine at the beginning of the video.

In addition to power, some of it is technique.

That is the one! So cool. In the old days we would knock a link out of the chain to make them wheelie better. Can you get a shorter belt?

It takes a combination of speed, traction and the right RPMs to keep and maintain a wheelie. The more HP and the better the tires the easier the wheelie. More weight, the more HP/Torque you'll need. In 1975 I bought a brand new '75 Honda CB360 Twin, 395 lbs. and I don't even remember the tires, but with a lot of practice I got that 23HP? motorcycle to wheelie across a truck-stop parking lot and come down soft. It took just getting to know the bike. Practice ..Practice ..Practice

I'm not sure I understand how shortening the chain helps it wheelie. Is it just so you can adjust the wheel a little further forward without it falling off to make the wheelbase a tiny amount shorter?

Yes. Like the inverse of ricers putting real long swingarms on to keep the front down.

I can do a wheelie on a friken Vespa. The technique is opposite of the drag. Pull the handle bar and go up, on a drag you push, people even strap the front end.

Some can wheelie at 2 miles per hour balancing the bike.

Take some practice and the more you have practiced the slower you can do a wheelie.

The torque or HP don't count, technique and set-up do. Doing a wheel with a twenty over fork take more torque ??? with the right technique it can be done.

Harleys are difficult, the balance point is waaaaaay up there and you run out of rpm quick. I can get the sporty up and hold it but my old dyna used to scare the shit out of me, never could balance it.
